Pinelands
is Cape Towns most
centrally situated suburb,
with easy convenient access
to all motorways in any
direction. Pinelands,
famous for its tree-lined
avenues, attractive thatched
roof houses and village
atmosphere, was the first
garden city of South Africa.
The
Pinelands layout plan
was the first town planning
scheme prepared in South
Africa and formed the
basis for South Africas
first and subsequent town
planning legislation.
The area was part of the
Uitvlugt Forest Reserve
donated by the State to
the Garden Cities Trust
shortly after it was formed
in 1918 by the honourable
Richard Stuttaford. The
original layout of Pinelands
was prepared in 1919 by
Thomas, Hennell &
James, Architects of London.
They were associated with
the first two garden cities
established in Great Britain
through the efforts of
Ebenezer Howard, a forerunner
of contemporary town planning
and the originator of
the new town and garden
city concepts.
Buildings
and zones in the area
have been declared national
monuments and Olde Pinelands
is dominated by original
buildings built in the
1920s
